What is the Crew?
The Crew is a programme started by the JIMS Project to give young adults an opportunity to volunteer for a year, serving God by serving the community of Kilkeel. The Crew members play a vital role in nurturing the young people of Kilkeel. This is youth work at it’s best: staying up late to talk, having cups of tea with a young person, staffing Jims programmes and activities, and encouraging fellow youth workers. Crew members are supported and encouraged through weekly team times, a two week training course at the beginning of the year, one-on-one time with their supervisor, and on-going training throughout the year.
The Crew is involved in and responsible for many activities, including: drop-in/youth club, schools work, Souled Out, street/detached work and children’s clubs. There is a lot of room for your own creativity and ideas, both within these activities and outside of them. One of the greater tasks of the Crew that cannot be specifically outlined is that of building relationships with the youth of Kilkeel. We are here to challenge and encourage them as well as be positive role models in their lives. Many of those that come into JIMS will already have a relationship with Christ. These young people need to be loved, encouraged, and challenged. Others that come in will have chosen not to enter into that relationship with Christ. We say that because most here have heard the Gospel in some form. Many of the kids have had religious education classes in school. Most have attended church at some point or another. These kids need us just to love them, have honest conversations with them, try to answer their questions, and love them some more.
Loving young people, both Christian and non-Christian, can be a challenge. There are hard days. But it is also a blessing. It is a truly awesome experience to watch them make decisions for Christ and grow in their faith. We cry with them and for them in the tough times and rejoice with them in their triumphs, both large and small. Our hope is that the hearts of the Crew would echo that of Paul’s in his letter to the Colossians: “My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” (Colossians 2:2-3)
